Career Corner Dress for Success First Impressions Count - Hallie Crawford

Career Corner Dress for Success First Impressions Count - Hallie Crawford I was recently interviewed for an article about how to dress for success for Media Job Market. The article titled Dress for Success: First Impressions Count is by Hayli Morrison Dress for Success: First Impressions Count Bronte Hasty cried the first time she applied Dermablend. The 32-year-old information technology specialist applied the concealment makeup not to cover scars, acne or skin discoloration. She used it to cover something she considered beautiful, but society considered taboo â€" her facial tattoos. She’s had them for nearly five years, the courageous result of a longtime obsession with the art form. “I’m not comfortable in the makeup,” Hasty said. “The first time, it felt like I was not only covering the tattoos, but I was covering myself.” Now, Hasty spends 25 minutes every weekday morning blending the makeup just right to cover the swirls above her eyebrows and the small dots lining the center of her face. At the end of it all, she looks like your average, glasses-wearing, young office professional. “It’s a big commitment, considering the average time it would take for normal makeup would be 5 minutes,” she said. It’s a dilemma facing the up-and-coming generation of professionals. How much of your personal identity must you give up to blend in and succeed? Apparently, a lot. According to a July 2007 survey by online career site Vault.com, 85 percent of employees believe that tattoos and body piercings will hurt a person’s chances of finding a job. Two-thirds of poll respondents felt that tattoos and piercings affect the perception of co-workers and employers. Hasty agrees wholeheartedly. She has never entered a job interview without wearing Dermablend, and adheres very strictly to corporate dress code. She often goes a step above to dress a bit more formal than her colleagues, though after a while she might introduce into her work wardrobe some capri pants or shirts with three-quarter length sleeves. “I break people in slowly so that when I walk up to their desk, they’re not staring at me, but they’re listening to what I’m saying that’s work-related,” said Hasty, who also has a neck tattoo and an earlobe stretched with a large-gauge earring that remains mostly hidden by her long hair. “I might get some weird looks and some comments from upper management, but once they get to know me, they like me and they just ignore it.” Like most young professionals, Hasty quickly understood that she had to look a certain way to be taken seriously in the professional world â€" especially in the conservative Texas region where she resides. But dress code can vary so greatly by industry, company, and geographical area, it can be a very fine line to walk for up-and-coming professionals. After all, there are plenty of stories of people being turned away for being overdressed. It is all about balancing your outward appearance with your inward feelings, said career coach Hallie Crawford, MA, CPCC, and author of the upcoming Flying Solo: Career Transition Tips for Singles. Attire that is comfortable, yet professional, can help you project confidence and better your job performance, which in turn can lead to a raise or promotion. “Take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘What impression would I make?’ If it’s not the image you want, maybe you need to work on it,” Crawford said. “Maybe it’s just a higher-quality suit, because you can tell a difference sometimes. Maybe something a little bit easier could be a wallet upgrade for guys, or a purse for girls. “Keeping your office organized is another thing,” she added. “If you have a disorganized office, people might get the impression that you’re a mess.” When it comes to job interviews, appearance is everything. A little pre-interview research can go a long way toward determining appropriate dress. If anything, it would be better to err on the side of dressing too formal, but that doesn’t even necessarily entail a traditional dress suit, Crawford said. “Time have changed, but make sure you’ve got a haircut, look clean-cut and professional, and look like you’ve thought about it,” she said. “That’s the first impression somebody has of you, even though people would like to say, ‘We’re not going to judge you on your appearance, but on your skills and experience.’ But that’s human nature.” Hasty foresees a day when corporate expectations might slacken up a bit as older managers retire and are replaced by younger managers. However, she fully understands the staid mindset of the current, older, upper management set. “I think they are different generations. They have certain ideas in their head as to what type of person (a tattooed) person must be,” she said. “The younger generation, even if they don’t like it, they’re more open-minded.” But then, Hasty is quick to admit that her current situation could be a lot worse. She is able to excel in her chosen profession while maintaining the appearance she loves â€" granted, underneath layers of Dermablend. With a knowing tone of voice, she says, “I think I’m getting to have my cake and eat it, too.” ___________________ Hallie Crawford Atlanta Career Coach Please Share This

That would be the main way you'd realize they have numerous imaginative gifts that are holding up toburst out. These people have taken their melodic, masterful, or scholarly interests and pushed them into a storeroom, particularly as it applies to their vocations. Numerous experts quit investing energy in imaginative undertakings or if nothing else consign such interests to travel time. By doing this, they can make their day by day lives tiring and unfulfilling. Beforehand, I expounded on two or three customers in the post, The Arts and Your Career. Both of the customers I expounded on are storage room creatives. This post was initially distributed in June of 2016. It was refreshed in February of 2020. Let me give you several new models. Communicate Media Quite a long while back I worked with Larry. For a long time, Larry was utilized by a significant broadcasting company. Everybody revealed to him he had the coolest activity on the planet since he chipped away at sports sponsorship bargains. This was large stuff! He drank the Kool-Aid and thought everything individuals revealed to him he had a fantasy workâ€"well, not so much… He didn't quite appreciate sports. The backers were an agony to work with. He worked truly extended periods of time, voyaged a decent arrangement, and was from his family a significant part of the time. Actually it was a shocking activity that paid truly well. At that point came the reductions, and he was out in the city. He realized he could go to work for another significant system… GAG! The TV promoting and sponsorship world was changing, and not to improve things. He didn't have the foggiest idea what to do straightaway. Tune in to the latest scene Diagnosing After we worked through his Career Pivot assessmentâ€"which is based on the Birkman evaluationâ€"we analyzed him as a storage room inventive. Throughout the years, he had taken the entirety of his inventive advantages, bundled them up perfectly, and put away them away. He had become an on-screen character and assumed that job for more than 20 years. In my post Are You Your Authentic Self or an Actor at Work? I talk about what number of us become entertainers right off the bat in our professions. We assume jobs and we frequently get great at assuming those jobs. The issue is that when we hit our 50s, remaining in character gets debilitating. Larry had become a very procedure situated task administrator and he was acceptable at it. Presently in his late 40s, assuming this job was depleting however it took care of the tabs. Making a Pivot to Digital Media Subsequent to going through 20 years tuning in to others as opposed to himself, Larry decided to profession rotate. He has been working agreement positions in the computerized showcasing world. His innovative flash is being lit and he is making sense of what he needs to do versus what others need him to do. Initially, he turned into the universe of advanced advertising by overseeing different creatives inside a specialty office. He got the chance to oversee photograph and video shoots, which cheerfully satisfies his innovative side. Sadly, the organization was sold and closed down. Turn into High Tech Marketing He has since been recruited by a product organization as a contractual worker to deal with an assortment of advertising exercises, including expo insurance, site upgrade, and marking. His innovative side is in full view. He is not, at this point a storage room imaginative. The fascinating part is Larry would have never been recruited as a full-time representative as he has no industry aptitude. Rather, he was recruited as a temporary worker and ought to be welcomed on as a full-time representative in the following couple of months. Larry might be making a large portion of the cash he used to, yet he is a lot more joyful. He has the adaptability that he so aches for. The compensation will improve after some time, however will never be what he used to make. All things considered, he is coming out of his imaginative storage room. Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable

Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable Jobless and Happy or Employed and Miserable? Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable Ihear and read tales about individuals who feel hopeless in their occupations, yet can't chance stopping in the present employment advertise. Some who have clutched their employments are in any event, communicating envy toward the individuals who have been laid off. It helps me to remember a line from an old TV dramatization about a looming atomic assault: The living will begrudge the dead. That is somewhat sensational, yet it appears to be exceptionally unexpected to be desirous of somebody who's gathering joblessness while you're drawing a consistent check. All things considered, there's sufficient hopelessness among the utilized that I'm certain some of them have wanted for their own cutbacks. (You mean I don't need to endure this hopeless employment any longer and can stay in bed?!? Superb!!) Indeed, even the self assured people among the still-utilized might be progressively well-suited to brave the downturn before they search for new openings. In light of the consequences of an ongoing study, 54% of utilized grown-ups in North America are in any event to some degree liable to search for new openings once the economy pivots. That is reasonable if: (1) They didn't care for their occupations or organizations even before the downturn struck yet feel they have to wait until work possibilities improve, or (2) They ended up working more hours and investing less energy with their families after they took on more work following a round or two of cutbacks. In the mean time, there's no deficiency of stuff on the web that says how being laid off can be a fantastically invigorating encounter that gives you an opportunity to energize yourself, gain some new useful knowledge, invest more energy with the family, and, hell, possibly win a Nobel Prize. In 2002, during my own 7-month-long cutback, I did all that (aside from the Nobel part), and keeping in mind that it kept my spirits up, the discouraging sentiment of being jobless didn't leave. It's a terrible inclination, regardless of whether it goes on for just minutes. Trust me, you don't need it. This drove me to think about how individuals are faring in this downturn. In case you're utilized, how are things grinding away? In case you're jobless and searching for a vocation, what actions are you taking to remain engaged and idealistic in the midst of your pursuit of employment?
